Biography

Celebration of life services for Barbara Jean (Pierce) Myles, 58, of Lubbock, Texas were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday October 13, 2005 at Agape' United Methodist Church. Dr. Shera Atkinson and the Rev. Dave Treat officiated. Dear friends Julie Wyrick and Craig Rutherford provided the organ music and the musical solo. Arrangements were directed by Resthaven Funeral Home. The service was wonderfully uplifting and inspirational. The family was overwhelmed by and is very grateful for the outpouring of love and support shown to them by the more than 200 people in attendance. We will never forget this and we thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.

Barbara passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday October 9, 2005 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock after almost 18 years of courageous struggles against non-hodgkins lymphoma and other health problems. She was born on August 24, 1947, in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Ray E. and Helen N. Pierce. She married Charles W. Myles on June 7, 1969 in St. Louis. They lived in St Louis, Missouri; Columbus, Ohio; Lausanne, Switzerland; and Urbana, Illinois, before moving to Lubbock in 1978.

Barbara was a very successful Avon salesperson for 26 years and was a member of Avon’s President's Club, their society of top sellers. She was proud to be a founding member of the Joe Arrington Cancer Center Cancer Survivors Support Group at Covenant Hospital. She was a mentor and an inspiration to numerous cancer survivors and their families. She served as a Volunteer for the American Cancer Society and for the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society. She was very active in Agape' United Methodist Church, in the United Methodist Women, in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority (for 37 years), and in the Twentieth Century Club. In 2005, she served as the President-Elect of the Lubbock City Council of Beta Sigma Phi.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Charley; their son, Chris Myles and his wife, Kristen of Orlando, Florida; their son, Steve Myles and his wife, Elizabeth of Houston; her sister, Dorothy Robles of Granite City, Illinois; her two brothers, Richard Pierce of Owensville, Missouri, and Donald Pierce of St Louis, Missouri; and her numerous nieces and nephews. She was a loving wife, best friend, and true life partner to Charley and a loving mother to Chris, Kristen, Steve, and Liz. She was a loving sister to Dot and Bob Robles, Rich and Colleen Pierce, Don and Cheryl Pierce, Barbara and Bill Griffiths, Marilynn and Bill Fitzpatrick, and Doug and Signe Myles. She was a a loving Aunt to her many neices and nephews and their spouses. She was a loving, wonderful, inspirational, unselfish, giving friend to all who knew her. The world is, by far, a very much better place because of her presence here for more than 58 years and because of the love she gave to all she knew. She is terribly missed by everyone she knew.

The family suggests memorials to the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society, to the American Cancer Society, to Agape' United Methodist Church (1215 Slide Road, Lubbock, TX 79416), or to the Barbara J. Myles Memorial Scholarship Fund at Agape' Child Development Center (same address as the church).
