Biography
“God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers.”
(Jewish Proverb)
Bonnie O’Neill was born on August 23, 1924 in Rainier, Washington. She grew up in the Puget Sound area and graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1942. She married Bill O’Neill, of Colby, Washington, in 1944. As a member of “The Greatest Generation,” her wisdom and strength reflected growing up during the Great Depression, coming of age during World War II, succeeding through effort and perseverance, and dedication to family.
Bonnie was truly a beautiful person, inside and out. She was kind, loving and supportive. She was always there to provide encouragement, celebrate or wipe a tear, and love us -- no matter what. She was the glue that held her family together through the successes and challenges of life.
She exuded a quiet confidence and a marvelous sense of humor. She loved to laugh … and we laughed often! She was also a wonderful homemaker and an excellent cook. Her fried chicken, chicken gravy, potato salad, banana bread, and special white cake with lemon filling are legendary among family and friends.
Bonnie experienced a life-changing stroke in January of 2002. With the help of her family, caregivers, and friends, she was able to remain at home and continue her legacy of love, courage, humor, patience and gratitude. When asked what she “wanted for Christmas 2007” --- she promptly answered “2008.”
Bonnie O’Neill passed away at home on November 29, 2008. Bonnie passed knowing that she was loved very much and that those in her life were eternally grateful for the time they had with her.
Bonnie O’Neill is survived by her son Larry, daughter Judy, and grandsons Michael and David. She is also survived by her new granddaughter-in-law Maura, sister-in-laws Irene, Mary and Maureen; brother-in-law Oscar; nieces Bette, Deirdre, Donna, Jo, Kathy, Linda, Lou Anne, Maureen, Mariann and Sharon; nephews Barry, Ed, Jim, John, Joe, Orin and Terry; her wonderful caregivers - Maria, Mia and Brandy - who helped make it possible for her to be at home; many friends; and her cats Smokey, Beau and Rodgie.
All of us have many beautiful memories and unending love for this very great lady. The pain in our hearts is tempered by the happiness that she is no longer in pain and has a new role in our lives --- she will be watching over us until we meet again.
