Irene E. Franklin , 79, of Austin, passed away on November 12 in an Austin Hospital. Irene was born on January 25, 1928 in Austin to parents Raymond Patterson and Eula Josephine Matthews. She had retired from the University of Texas as a PBX Operator. Irene had a special kindness, found something special in everyone she encountered, and loved everyone she met. She had a fantastic sense of humor and brought smiles to all she knew. Irene was an accomplished musician and was a pioneer of country and gospel music in Austin and nationwide. Her love of music and talent inspired many of her family and friends to continue in her legacy. She will be missed by so many.
Irene was welcomed at Heaven's gates by her dear grandson Keith Harris. She was also preceded in death by her parents, son Lawrence Franklin; brother James Patterson and sister Gladys Haynes. Irene is survived by her daughters, Shirley Walsh of Austin, Linda Tabor of Austin and Janet Lynn Wilson and husband Brent of Hendersonville, TN; grandchildren Lisa Harris, Kim Rodgers, Mickey Glona, Pennie Hausmann, Denise Tucker and Buffy Medrano. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
The family received visitors from 6pm – 8pm on Thursday at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home in Austin. Funeral Services were held at 10am on Friday at Cook-Walden Forest Oaks Funeral Home. The Rev. Roger Luther officiated. Committal services and interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery in Austin.
