I am Kate Johantgen, an administrative assistant at MeM.
It is with great satisfaction that I spend much of my time working with the "A Life Remembered" books - interacting with families when they request additional copies and keeping track of the printing and shipping of hundreds of books each month.
Prior to my joining MeM in 2005, I worked as an administrative assistant for almost 21 years for the accounting firm Ernst & Young and the consulting firm Cap Gemini.
I grew up in Shelby, Ohio, population 10,000, in north central Ohio. Miami University in Oxford, Ohio was my next stop, where I received my BA degree in American Studies. After graduation I volunteered for about 3 years with an organization that helped migrant workers. That experience allowed me
to live in Boston, Massachusetts, Tehachapi, California and Salinas, California, and travel over land from one coast to another several times. I then returned to Ohio, settling in Cincinnati, and eventually buying a house.
I was the 3rd of 6 baby-boomer children, all of us born within a 7 year span. My parents passed away many years ago, and my siblings and I have scattered: 3 of us are in Ohio, 1 on Michigan, 1 in Oregon and 1 in Philadelphia. I have 8 nieces and nephews, ranging in ages from 16 to 32. We try to gather
most Thanksgiving holidays -- but that is becoming more difficult because the next generation is growing up and moving on with their lives.
My favorite past time for many years was to travel - domestically and internationally. I've traveled to 39 of the 50 United States, and have spent time in China (visiting the Great Wall was on my bucket list), Canada (Niagara Falls), Mexico (4 trips to interior cities), Brazil (the Amazon region
twice), Bolivia (the thin air of LaPaz in the Andes Mountains), the Czech Republic (an educational trip learning about life after the "Fall of the Wall"), Italy (Florence is my favorite city in the world), and most recently, Pakistan.
Perhaps I have embarked on life's most interesting journey - marriage!!! I married Joe Augustine in July 2011 after a 5 year and very-long-distance courtship. Joe is a native of Karachi, Pakistan and lived there until a week before our marriage. We met through a mutual friend when he attended a conference
in New York City. After a couple more in-person visits, daily phone conversations, and working through the bureaucracy of the U.S. immigration, Joe and I are finally living under the same roof, learning to share a life together. It has been an adventure so far.
