CORNELIA M. SABINE
Cornelia Corron Manley was born 15th May 1910 in Elgin, Il, the only child of Joseph Morris Manley and Mary Elizabeth Glennon Manley. She died at home in Colorado Springs on 20th August 2004 at the age of 94. She studied music at Northwestern University and was awarded a B.A. degree in 1932 where she was a member of AAUW and Phi Beta (national fraternity of music and dramatic arts.) after which she became a popular member of musical circles in her home town as a recitalist and musical lecturer. She also occasionally wrote a review column in the local newspaper commenting on local musical performances.
After her marriage in 1937 to Dr. Paul E. Sabine, a well-known physicist from Riverbank Laboratories in Geneva, Il, she continued to perform and teach music and then in 1942 she entered Radcliffe College to follow a life long dream to study psychology. In 1947, the couple moved to Colorado Springs, and Mrs. Sabine worked for a time in the Federal Civil Service at Ent Air force base and began classes at Colorado College.
In 1949 she earned her second B.A. degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Colorado College, this time in psychology, followed by an M.A. in Human Behavior again from Colorado College in 1950. After advanced professional training at Stanford University, she began her career in counseling with the Pikes Peak Family Counseling and Mental Health Center, and with the Colorado Springs Child Guidance Clinic. She continued in counseling after her husband’s death in 1958, and eventually moved to private practice first joining Psychiatric Associates PC in 1970. She made several more moves before retiring in May 1993.
During her long career she was a charter member of the El Paso County Psychological Society, from whom she received the 1980 award for outstanding contributions to psychology. The award has become an annual one named in her honor. She was likewise a charter member of the Colorado Psychologists in Private Practice and was instrumental in forming Colorado Women Psychologists in Private Practice. She was an active member of the Colorado Psychological Association and a member and evaluator for the National Association of Disability Examiners and a board member of the Samaritan Counseling Center of Colorado Springs.
Mrs. Sabine took a keen interest in her community and was a board member of the Colorado Springs Child Nursery Center, a member of the Interdisciplinary Committee on child custody and a member of the Committee for the Protection of Human Rights. Socially, she was an active member for many years in the Tuesday Club and enthusiastically supported the Colorado Springs Symphony and the Fine Arts Center.
She was a philanthropist, giving generously to many causes from animal welfare to education and was a benefactor to both the University of Colorado Aging Center and the Colorado College Psychology Department where her gifts via the Sabine Endowed Fund supported many projects, equipment and activities relative to psychology not regularly included in the annual budget of the department.
The Cornelia Manley Sabine Award is presented annually to the outstanding graduating psychology senior. Her advice to students is to use their knowledge of psychology to bring peace and understanding into relationships in our fractious modern world.
She was an avid international traveler. She attended many symposiums in her discipline around the world and likewise traveled for pleasure visiting old friends and making new.
After her 2nd retirement in 1993 (the 1st in 1983 lasted 10 weeks) Mrs. Sabine saw patients in her home, consulted by telephone and continued meeting monthly with a group of colleagues to share professional experiences. For a number of years she also generously gave her time to meet with a Psychology Class of Undergraduates at Colorado College to share her experiences as an “Elder” and as a Psychologist.
Although she did not have children of her own, she is survived by an extensive step-family and she will be missed by the many people whose lives she touched. A memorial service will take place on Friday, 22nd October, at Shove Memorial Chapel on the Colorado College Campus after which her ashes will be interred in Geneva, Il, next to her husband.
